I'm co-leading a workshop with yoga teacher Lilah Strauss later this month that combines yin yoga and Reiki healing. To make this workshop more special, we have found a sound healer to play live music during the event. In researching his offerings, I was intrigued to learn more about sound healing.
We use sound for so many things: communication, entertainment, to set a mood. It's little surprise that sound can also be used as a healing technique. Think about the last time you felt down - you likely turned on some slower, more somber music to compliment your mood. Or if you are getting ready for a fun night, maybe you play something more up-tempo.
Sound healing can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. It uses vibrations and frequencies to relax the mind to a state where internal healing can occur. Different sounds occur at different frequencies, and us people also emit our own sound waves. Healing can happen when the frequencies are tuned so that they are relaxing and healing to the listener, somewhat in sync with their internal sound waves.
Sound therapy can help treat sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood swings, and even pain. It can also help to bring about clarity, peace, relaxation, improved sleep, better focus, and a stronger immune system. Sound healing can be combined with traditional medication to make it more effective and holistic. You can also complement a meditation or Reiki session with sound healing, allowing the individual to get more relaxed and deeper into the session. Or one can use sound healing all by itself to relax and heal.
The sound healer for the YIn and Reiki event we have scheduled will have his acoustic guitar tuned to A432hz, which is a frequency associated with the Earth and our bodies' own natural healing vibrations.
